Why I started loving raffia crochet for summer projects
Share

Funny enough, I didn't fall in love with raffia immediately. At first I thought it looked beautiful in photos, but I wasn't convinced I would actually enjoy crocheting with it. Looking back now, it's hard to imagine my summer crochet projects without it.
I still remember the first time I tried crocheting with raffia.
To be honest, I wasn’t completely sure I would enjoy it. In photos raffia bags always looked beautiful and stylish, but I thought the material itself might feel too stiff compared to regular yarn.
But after finishing my first small summer bag, I changed my mind very quickly.
The first thing that surprised me was how light the finished bag felt in my hands. I actually checked the weight because it almost didn’t feel real compared to some heavier crochet bags I made before.
Since then, raffia slowly became one of my favorite materials for summer crochet projects.
What makes raffia so nice for summer
For me, the biggest advantage of raffia is definitely the light weight.
One of my raffia crochet clutches weighs only around 50 grams. During summer that makes such a difference, especially when you carry your bag all day while walking, traveling, or sitting somewhere outside in the heat.
I also noticed that raffia naturally keeps its shape really well. Even simple stitches look clean and structured without needing a lot of extra reinforcement inside the bag.
And honestly, raffia just has a very special summer feeling.
Most of the time I wear my raffia bags with linen clothes, simple dresses, or neutral summer outfits. Somehow they always work together naturally without looking overstyled.

Even very simple raffia crochet projects tend to look modern and polished.
Another thing I didn’t expect

What surprised me most was how enjoyable the process itself became.
At first I thought raffia would feel uncomfortable to crochet with for long periods of time, but after a few projects I actually started enjoying it more and more.
There’s something very satisfying about watching the shape slowly appear row by row. Because raffia already has such a beautiful texture, even simple crochet stitches start looking good very quickly.
And I think that’s one of the reasons so many people fall in love with raffia projects after trying them once.
A small project I usually recommend first
If someone asked me where to start with raffia crochet, I probably wouldn’t suggest making a large bag immediately.

Personally, I think smaller projects are a much more relaxing way to get used to the material.
That’s exactly why I created this raffia AirPods case pattern.
It’s a small project, but it helps you understand how raffia behaves while crocheting. And at the end you get something genuinely useful instead of just a practice swatch.
I also like projects like this because they don’t require much material, which makes them feel less stressful for a first try.
The raffia bag I use most often
Another project I ended up using constantly during summer is this raffia phone bag pattern.

Originally I made it because I wanted something small and lightweight for walks and cafés — something that carries just the essentials without feeling bulky or heavy.
Funny enough, it became one of the bags I reach for most often during warm weather.
Sometimes I wear it as a crossbody bag when traveling. Other times I attach a smaller wrist strap and carry it more like a clutch.
And I know this sounds simple, but raffia somehow makes even very casual summer outfits feel a little more put together.
My favorite summer raffia project
But if I had to choose only one raffia project for summer, it would probably still be this raffia crochet clutch pattern.

There’s something about raffia clutches that feels timeless to me.
They look relaxed and minimal, but at the same time elegant enough to wear almost anywhere during summer.
I also personally love that raffia naturally creates structure without needing overly complicated techniques. Even fairly simple crochet stitches can look very clean and polished with this material.
And honestly, at some point these projects stop feeling like “just another crochet bag.” It starts feeling more like creating a real summer accessory you genuinely want to carry every day.
Why raffia looks so beautiful
I’ve thought about this quite a lot while working on different raffia projects.
I think part of the reason is the balance raffia has:
- natural texture;
- light weight;
- structure;
- simplicity.
It never feels too heavy visually.
Even minimal raffia projects somehow still look interesting and modern without needing lots of decorative details.
That’s probably why raffia crochet bags keep showing up every summer in resort style outfits, Pinterest inspiration photos, and vacation looks.

Final thoughts
For me, raffia completely changed the way I feel about summer crochet.
It reminded me that crochet projects don’t always need to be complicated to feel beautiful. Sometimes the simplest things end up becoming the most wearable and enjoyable.
And maybe that’s why I keep coming back to raffia every summer — it always brings back that feeling of lightness, creativity, and slow handmade summer days.
